The review written by Sylvain Lupari (www.gutsofdarkness.com)

With Epicentre, we feel that Certamen is making a new turn. On an approach definitely more aggressive we have the impression that Certamen seeks to exploit a new style. Between free jazz and a structure electronic music, titles with intro, verse, refrain, verse, etc, Certamen goes ahead while offering an album which requires that we stop and listen. Because, we never know what the future is make of. We clearly feel this difference as of the opening of Sparkling Stones. The tonality change and Certamen sound structure is more flexible. Low and hopping keys mould the initial sequence, which is tease by metal breaths and jazz cymbals. On a funky tempo, drum rolls on beautiful wrapping layers, cover of fluid solos which do not have any more this Certamen sound mark. Always so virtuoso, his solos are the equivalence of guitars solos. With amazement, we seize the new sound dimension of Certamen, which is locating between a funky jazz and progressive electronic. An astonishing mixture which has its charms and which we will find further with the track Rain after Drought, a free jazz style with Vocoder voice. Sparkling Stones is a long title, as Certamen likes them and he triturates it with unexpected permutations and unsuspected passages. In this labyrinth with multiple corridors, the Polish synthesist stuffs our ears full up with strange tribal cosmic rhythms. Long solos which require three hands, Vocoder, smooth choirs, sequence percussions, random sequences on symphonic layers; everything is there on floating or explosive passages. An excellent opener that shows the possibility to ear other beautiful surprises. Diamonds is a beautiful atmospheric track with increasing circles that filters smooth choirs on a floating movement, a very touching move. Seismic Tremors bring us back to a waving sequence on bass and voltigeantes keys, as well as fatty chords with subtle resonances on discrete cymbals. The sequential road is a punctuate linear layout of synth with multiple appearances whom fuses beautiful segment solos. From sonority of the metallic scrapers, techno kind, to slipping lines of the Middle East Certamen explores the recesses of sound synth with ingeniousness and an obvious pleasure. An atonic track which worth many rhythms without lives. The final track is a bit in Kraftwerk mood, a vocoder drops robotic and guttural voice; ‘’Geothermal Machines‘’, and a fluid sequence undulates a harmonious line at the flexible rhythm on the robot-like words Geothermal Machines. The tempo is getting better with percussions, more accentuated sequence and chorus which are mould in this flexible environment. The rhythm becomes more animate on synthetic riffs and superb sequences percussions that Certamen works out with solos of percussions. A rare and unique moment that goes pretty well. The rhythm becomes more flowing on a very harmonious synth, with the essence of a more balanced Kraftwerk, and juicy synth solos, a little as if Certamen would play guitar in a rock'n'roll band with futuristic approaches. With Epicentre, Certamen is taking a rather daring turn. It modifies its free and impromptu style of Berlin School, to give a stricter framework, more structure. And the first results seem interesting. Admittedly, we are far from his usual style. But Certamen music is always well done and the musical structures are always animate by his intense desire to exploit his ideas to the maximum, while preserving its personality, on beautiful harmonies. This is what Epicentre is all about.
